Speaker Q&A: Alasdair Murdoch, Burger King UK
Alasdair Murdoch, CEO of Burger King UK, says he loves Commercial Kitchen for its focus on ‘trends and ideas’, and is looking forward to sharing his opinions and experiences in an exclusive Keynote interview at the show.
What do you feel is the key for operators to successfully compete against their competitors?
A clearly differentiated brand that stands for something in customer’s eyes.
What do you see as key trends for commercial kitchens in the coming year?
I think size or the lack of it and the adaptability. With upwards-only rents, space is a premium so how can you get a kitchen into 30% less space than a year ago?
Can you tell us a bit about your much-anticipated sessions at Commercial Kitchen 2018?
Normally these sessions are me just giving my opinion. I have worked very broadly across the sector for many years, so have many different experiences and can talk fairly unknowledgeably on a lot of issues!
Who or what inspires you to be even better?
I cannot bear mediocrity, you have got to have a go. I have been lucky enough to work for many fantastic people, I get motivated by great food and ingredients. I tend to respect humility in individuals, and I try very hard (I might not always succeed) to see the good in everyone and see opportunities to learn all over the place.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Have fun at work, you work far too long in life so make sure you get out there and laugh a lot. If you do not enjoy your work, stop, change and do something else, don’t be the mood hoover that we all hate. Most importantly, work with people you like.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know:
I was a professional Polo player after leaving The Army (albeit not that successful…).
